Suddenly Spring Strikes the Senses

By Kelly Watts Williams

Who suddenly smells flowers**
Springing from the soil
Dancing in the fashion of a kite on a string?

Who suddenly feels discombobulated
When the sun hits you full-on, point blank
Revealing all that artificial light does not?

Who suddenly hears the rain
Drops caught in spider webs
In the sequester of a tree’s hollow?

Who suddenly tastes the delights of mother nature
Breathing in the aromas of the sweet woods and sour grasses
Drinking in the mist from her plentifully bedewed chalice?

Who suddenly sees the rainbow
Baring it’s fair beauty across the sky
As comforting to the spirit as biscuits and gravy are to the soul?

Who suddenly senses warmth alighting bird-like
Take a respite here awaiting summer to strike!

**First line taken from From Jack Gilbert’s poem “Horses at Midnight Without a Moon”
